Nikon's original FX-format CMOS image sensor with 36.0 (H) x 23.9 (V) mm image size; 12.1 effective megapixels; Superior picture quality throughout a wide ISO sensitivity range of ISO 200 to 6400; can be set to ISO-equivalent 25,600. Nikon recommends Ecamm Live for Mac and vMix or SparkoCam for PC. This software can see the Nikon camera’s USB video feed (keep in mind no audio will be fed over USB) and then use it to make a virtual webcam option that can be used in various streaming and chatting applications, such as Zoom, WebEx, Twitch, Facebook Live, and more.

I've experimented with all possible options to use my D700 tethered to my mac. (except LR3, it wasnt available when I made my tests) And I can tell you that if you are really looking for the simplest, easiest & fastest option then you have to go with nikon software (I think it was called 'camera control') That is your only option(!).
