Electronic products are made from valuable resources and materials, including metals, plastics, and glass, all of which require energy to mine and manufacture. Donating or recycling consumer electronics conserves our natural resources and avoids air and water pollution, as well as greenhouse gas emissions that are caused by manufacturing virgin materials.
For example:
- Recycling one million laptops saves the energy equivalent to the electricity used by more than 3,500 US homes in a year.
- For every million cell phones we recycle, 35 thousand pounds of copper, 772 pounds of silver, 75 pounds of gold and 33 pounds of palladium can be recovered.

- For your computer or laptop, consider upgrading the hardware or software instead of buying a brand new product.
- Delete all personal information from your electronics.
- Remove any batteries from your electronics, they may need to be recycled separately.

Manufacturers and retailers offer several options to donate or recycle electronics. Through participating stores and retailers in North America, our BACK 2 M·A·C take back program facilitates our use of recycled materials from returned makeup packaging to create new compacts; what is not recycled is converted to energy, reducing the amount of packaging that ends up directly in landfill.
Through recycling and waste-to-energy elements, our BACK 2 M∙A∙C take back program in North America has prevented nearly one million pounds of material from ending up directly in landfills per year, saving 500 tons of energy.
Each year in North America, M∙A∙C incorporates over 100,000 pounds of recycled material from packaging returned through BACK 2 M∙A∙C into new compacts, giving old packaging a second life.
The BACK 2 M∙A∙C program reduces the carbon footprint of M∙A∙C compacts in the United States, excluding California by 9%.
Approximately 107,000lbs of ABS material is recycled per year through the program.
Upon returning six empty M∙A∙C makeup containers to a participating M∙A∙C counter, consumers may can choose a standard M∙A∙C lipstick of their choosing as a thank you. Please note, Lipsticks provided at no charge cannot be returned or exchanged. Consumers who are M∙A∙C Lover loyalists may choose a standard lipstick, lipglass or small eye shadow.
